St. Joseph County Juvenile Multi-Services Center
The St. Joseph County Juvenile Center provides a wide range of services under one roof. With separate components for secure pretrial detention, longer term dispositional care and non-secure dayreporting, all of which share central services such as food preparation, laundry and gymnasium space, the Juvenile Center supports the diverse programming needs of the county. Detention areas for a population of 72 juveniles are arranged along a central circulation spine, with direct and easily supervised circulation between housing, education, dining and recreation.
Outdoor recreation courtyards are interspersed with all housing and program areas to permit direct access and natural lighting of interior spaces. Housing units, with living and sleeping space for nine residents, are arranged in pairs to support staffing efficiency and provide a shared activity space for small groups of residents. Separate housing and program areas for sentenced youth, with independent access to the central gym and dining areas, are provided. A non-secure dayreporting program offering a full range of educational and intervention services is located near the gym and has its own public access.
The Juvenile Center provides space for all family court-related functions, including four court-rooms with contemporary security features and full support areas and judicial offices. Juvenile access occurs only through secure areas. Offices for probation services, the district attorney and public defender and CASA are incorporated in the plan. All public access areas, including courtrooms, feature natural lighting via skylights and clerestory windows.
